Tucson Paid $333,000 to Put a National Championship Downtown

Rio Nuevo pays the Indoor Football League $333,000 a year to keep its title game at Tucson Arena. Year two is the Arizona Rattlers against a Green Bay team that lost here last August.

Tucson wrote a check for this one. In November 2024 the Rio Nuevo board — the tax district that funds redevelopment in the center of the city — voted to pay the Indoor Football League $333,000 a year for three years to move its national championship to Tucson Arena. The second of those three games kicks off Sunday afternoon on Church Avenue. Las Vegas had hosted the previous three. What the district is actually buying is the part worth reading.

The Matchup Has a Grudge In It

The Green Bay Blizzard and the Arizona Rattlers get the floor. Green Bay took the Eastern Conference for the second straight season by beating the Tulsa Oilers in overtime, behind seven touchdown passes from Liam Thompson — and the field goal that forced the extra period, off the foot of Andrew Mevis on the last play of regulation, hit the wire above the uprights and deflected through anyway. The Rattlers came out of the West the hard way, knocking off the defending champion Vegas Knight Hawks in round one behind three Max Meylor touchdown passes before beating top-seeded San Diego for the conference title. Green Bay has stood on this floor before and lost it: the Knight Hawks took the 2025 championship from them 64–61 here, in a game with 17 lead changes, 125 combined points and exactly one defensive stop, which arrived on the final snap.

What the $333,000 Is Supposed to Return

Tucson beat out Las Vegas and Nashville for the hosting rights. The projections the Rio Nuevo board worked from put roughly $1.4 million of impact on each game — about 450 hotel room nights across the multi-day event, an estimated $720,100 in dining and $415,390 in shopping, with the remainder spread across tickets, hotel rooms, parking, concessions and the advertising the league buys locally. Those are forecasts rather than receipts. They are the case for the spend, not proof of it.

Year One Left a Lot of Seats Open

The 2025 game drew 3,251 people into a building that seats 8,962, or roughly 36 percent of it. That figure is the one worth watching on Sunday, because the agreement runs out after the 2027 game and attendance is the number any renewal conversation starts from. An in-state finalist should help the gate: the Rattlers play their home games at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, a shade under two hours up I-10, and they arrive with seven national titles across 34 seasons of indoor football — 30 playoff appearances and 14 conference championships, most recently a title in 2024.

The Sugar Skulls are not in it. Tucson's club finished the regular season 6–8, claimed the fourth and final Western Conference playoff berth on the last weekend, and went out in round one to the San Diego Strike Force. That says something useful about the arrangement. Rio Nuevo did not buy a home game; it bought a neutral-site event that lands downtown every August no matter how the local team finishes. If you are weighing a place near the center of the city, that is the durable part — a contracted, nationally streamed event on the downtown calendar three summers running, independent of anyone's win-loss record.

A national championship is not a hard thing to buy if you are willing to pay for it, and Tucson was. The three-year term means the real test is not whether the game is good — last year's went to the final snap — but whether enough people come to treat the third Sunday in August as something that happens downtown.
