Six days of lectures, vintage bus rides and open doors at mid-century buildings, ending with a Sunday tour of private homes whose start point has not been announced yet.

Forty dollars buys a ticket into private mid-century houses in Tucson on Sunday, November 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. That home tour closes Tucson Modernism Week, which the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation runs from Tuesday, November 3, through that Sunday, now in its 15th year. The foundation has not yet published the tour's starting point, and one of the week's free events, a November 4 lecture on Tucson's neon signs, is already marked sold out. Anyone who wants a particular seat should book it this week rather than the week of.

The Free Half of the Week

Several events cost nothing but require a free ticket through the foundation's site. Copenhagen Imports, 3660 E. Fort Lowell Road, hangs an exhibit on the Cabat-Gill advertising agency titled "Selling the Modern Southwest," open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. William L. Bird, Jr. lectures there on artist Erni Cabat from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 5. The Bondante House, 5111 E. Citrus St., opens "Harwood Steiger: Fabrics of the West" from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, and keeps it open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., during the week. On Friday, November 6, at 5:30 p.m., George Smart speaks on preserving the country's modernist houses at the Tucson Creative Dance Center, 3131 N. Cherry Ave.

A Hexagonal House From 1952

The free event most useful to anyone who owns, or wants to own, an older Tucson house may be the pottery exhibition "Clay in the Modern West," open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7, because of where it hangs. The Ball-Paylore House at 2306 E. Waverly St. was built in 1952 to a design by architect Arthur T. Brown: a 1,203-square-foot hexagonal plan whose south-facing glass wall carries movable sun shades, an early passive solar system. The foundation bought it in 2019, before it reached the market. Two hours there show what a mid-century house was designed to do about the desert sun, which is the right question to ask of any listing from that era before asking what it needs.

Saturday Is the Busy Day

November 7 stacks most of the ticketed programming. A $15 walking tour of Garrett Eckbo's modern landscape at the Tucson Convention Center starts at 9 a.m. at the Leo Rich Theater, 260 S. Church Ave. At 10 a.m., Ken Scoville leads a 90-minute Miracle Mile tour aboard the Old Pueblo Trolley's vintage Tucson bus, with the departure point still to be announced. At 2 p.m., Demion Clinco leads the same kind of ride along the Sunshine Mile, leaving from 2435 E. Broadway Blvd. Each bus seat is $25.

Between the buses, $10 lectures cover architect James Savage, Tucson studio pottery, art and craft in the modern Tucson house, and architect Judith Chafee, with rooms still listed as to be determined. A $15 Vintage Trailer Show fills 2435 E. Broadway from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and a $160 cocktail party runs 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at an address sent to ticket holders. Friday night's $10 screening of "Schindler Space Architect" includes a Q&A with director Valentina Ganeva.

The Sunshine Mile tour covers ground the foundation itself helped protect. A 1953 naming contest gave the stretch of Broadway between Campbell Avenue and Country Club Road the name Sunshine Mile, and the foundation and the City of Tucson spent eight years nominating the historic district, which runs two miles through central Tucson from just west of Euclid Avenue to Country Club Road, before it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its east end runs along the northern edge of Broadmoor-Broadway Village.

Quick reference (October 19, 2026): Tucson Modernism Week, November 3-8. Home tour Sunday, November 8, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., $40, start location to be announced. VIP pass $220. Sold out: the Nov. 4 neon lecture. Saturday bus tours $25 each. Tickets and updates: preservetucson.org/modernism-week.

Why a Buyer Should Spend a Saturday Here

Mid-century houses still come to market around Tucson, carrying the same features the lecturers will be explaining: flat roofs, block walls, big glass, carports, overhangs set for the winter sun. A day spent looking at well-kept examples is a better way to learn what original looks like, and what has been changed, than reading listing remarks. For owners thinking of selling one, the same day shows which details people travel across town to see. Pick the free events first, then add the home tour and one bus ride if the budget allows.
