About Broadmoor-Broadway Village

A central Tucson historic neighborhood — roughly half a square mile bounded by Broadway Boulevard on the north, Country Club Road on the east, Tucson Boulevard on the west, and the Broadmoor subdivision line south of Stratford Drive — that wraps around what is widely cited as the first stand-alone shopping center built in Arizona. The neighborhood knits together three distinct pieces of Tucson history. The Broadway Village subdivision was platted in the 1930s along Country Club Road, and in 1939 developers John and Helen Murphey hired Swiss-born architect Josias Joesler to design the Broadway Village Shopping Center at Broadway and Country Club — a Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival plaza inspired by the village square at Pátzcuaro, Mexico, with low-pitched clay-tile roofs, arched arcades, carved niches, mortar-washed brick, and colored ceramic tile, and parking pulled to the rear so the storefronts open directly onto the street. Just south, the Broadmoor subdivision was laid out in 1944 on the grounds of a former golf course — the same defunct country club that gives Country Club Road its name — and built out between roughly 1944 and 1964 as one of Tucson's earliest cohesive collections of Ranch-style homes: single-story burnt-adobe and red-brick ranches that brought design features once reserved for upper-end developments to middle-market buyers. The 365-home Broadmoor Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 18, 2021. There is no fee HOA — the volunteer Broadmoor-Broadway Village Neighborhood Association (BBVNA) handles preservation and advocacy. The Arroyo Chico, an ephemeral urban wash and bird-and-wildlife corridor, threads through the center of the neighborhood, and residents sit within a couple of miles of downtown Tucson with walking and biking access to Reid Park, the Reid Park Zoo, El Con Center, and the Sunshine Mile mid-century commercial corridor rebuilding along Broadway, with the University of Arizona minutes northwest.
