About West University

Arizona's largest historic district and Tucson's most walkable neighborhood. Tucked into a 60-block grid between the University of Arizona and downtown — bounded by Speedway Boulevard on the north, 6th Street on the south, Park Avenue on the east, and Stone Avenue on the west — West University was the first suburb to push north of the Southern Pacific railroad. Originally platted as the Linda Vista Addition and Mansfeld's Addition in the 1890s and largely built out between 1890 and 1930, the neighborhood was shaped by prominent territorial-era architects including Henry Trost, Roy Place, Henry Jaastad, Annie Graham Rockfellow, David Holmes, and Merritt Starkweather. The result is more than 700 contributing buildings spanning Craftsman Bungalow, Mission Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Transitional Sonoran, and Art Deco styles — many built of stuccoed brick with basalt stone foundations quarried from nearby A-Mountain (Sentinel Peak). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and designated a City of Tucson Historic Preservation Zone in 1984, the neighborhood is governed by the volunteer West University Neighborhood Association (WUNA, founded 1979) — there is no fee HOA, but a strict design review applies to exterior changes. Residents walk to 4th Avenue's bars, breweries, vintage shops, and restaurants, the modern streetcar to downtown and the Mercado, and the U of A campus museums, Main Library, and McKale Center — all within a 10-minute walk.
