About Pie Allen

A small, walkable National Register historic neighborhood tucked directly south of the University of Arizona, sandwiched between the Iron Horse Historic District to the west and the Rincon Heights Historic District to the east. The Pie Allen Historic District is bounded by 6th Street on the north, 10th Street on the south, Euclid Avenue on the west, and Park Avenue on the east — a roughly 16-block compact grid containing 242 properties, of which 201 are contributing buildings (NRHP, 1996). Pie Allen takes its name from John Brackett "Pie" Allen (1818–1899), a New England-born territorial entrepreneur who earned his nickname selling dried-apple pies to U.S. Army soldiers in Arizona Territory in 1862, later served in the Arizona Territorial Legislature, was appointed Arizona Territorial Treasurer, and served as Tucson's mayor from 1875 to 1877 — and who personally led the 1867 effort to move the territorial capital from Prescott to Tucson. The neighborhood was built out between roughly 1870 and 1936, with the bulk of the housing stock completed between 1905 and 1925 to house Southern Pacific Railroad workers and University of Arizona students and faculty, and that history shows in one of central Tucson's most eclectic streetscapes: Transformed-Sonoran adobe row houses, American Territorial cottages, Queen Anne and Western Colonial homes, Craftsman bungalows, and Period Revival cottages all packed onto narrow lots set at the sidewalk's edge. The Pie Allen Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1996 and is protected today as part of the City of Tucson's joint Rincon Heights / Pie Allen Neighborhood Preservation Zone — established in 2008 to ensure new construction is dimensionally and architecturally compatible with the surrounding historic fabric. There is no fee HOA; exterior changes go through the volunteer Pie Allen Neighborhood Association and the City's design review under the joint NPZ Design Manual.
