About Colonia Solana

Tucson's first picturesque subdivision and one of the Southwest's most distinctive historic enclaves. Tucked between Country Club Road and Reid Park, Colonia Solana was platted in 1928 after landscape architect Stephen Child — a protégé of Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. — was hired by developer Harry E. Bryant to design a neighborhood that worked with the desert rather than over it. The result is a quiet, low-density warren of gently arcing concentric streets, five small triangular parks, and 116 irregularly shaped lots that follow the Arroyo Chico drainage instead of a grid. Of the 33 homes built before World War II, all but a handful are Spanish Colonial, Pueblo, or Mission Revival — many by Roy Place, Josias Joesler, Arthur T. Brown, and other period architects working under deed-restricted architectural review. Postwar infill brought Ranch, International, and Mid-Century Modern homes by the same caliber of designers. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and protected today as a City of Tucson Historic Preservation Zone, Colonia Solana offers an experience that feels like country living five minutes from downtown.
