About South Tucson

A 1.2-square-mile incorporated city completely surrounded by Tucson and tucked one mile south of downtown at the junction of Interstate 10 and Interstate 19. South Tucson voters first chose to incorporate on August 10, 1936 by a 52–35 vote to escape annexation by their larger neighbor; the Pima County Board of Supervisors dissolved the city in January 1938, but residents reincorporated by a 70–63 vote on March 27, 1939, and the City of South Tucson has run its own mayor-and-council government, police department, fire department, and city hall ever since. Long nicknamed the 'Pueblo Within a City,' the community is overwhelmingly Mexican-American and Yaqui in heritage and has spent nine decades earning its reputation as Tucson's Mexican food capital — South 4th Avenue between 22nd Street and 40th Street packs in dozens of family-run restaurants including Mi Nidito (opened 1952), whose 'President's Plate' was named after Bill Clinton's 1999 visit. Housing in the city is a deliberate mix of late-1800s and early-1900s Sonoran adobe row houses set right at the sidewalk's edge, Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial cottages, Bungalow Vernacular brick homes, and small post-war Ranch bungalows on compact lots. Because South Tucson is its own incorporated city rather than a homeowners-association subdivision, there is no master HOA covering the city — exterior and renovation work is governed by the City of South Tucson Building Department rather than a private design review.
