About El Encanto Estates

One of Tucson's first and most distinctive planned subdivisions, El Encanto Estates was platted in 1928 by attorney William Guerin Jr., Leroy James, and developer William Powhatan on what was then the far east edge of the city. The neighborhood's defining feature is its formal spoke-and-wheel street plan: six tree-lined avenues radiating from a 200-foot circular central park, all overlaid on a grid of palm-and-olive-lined paved streets. Most homes were built between 1929 and 1961 by Tucson's most prominent period architects — Josias Joesler, Merritt Starkweather, Henry O. Jaastad, Anne Rysdale, Arthur Brown, Friedman & Jobusch, and Frederick Eastman — under deed-restricted architectural review that ran into the early 1960s. The result is one of Arizona's purest concentrations of Spanish Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, and period Ranch architecture. El Encanto Estates was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and is protected today as a City of Tucson Historic Preservation Zone, with an active neighborhood association rather than a fee-based HOA.
