One of central Tucson's oldest and smallest historic neighborhoods, Barrio Anita sits immediately northwest of downtown, bounded roughly by Speedway Boulevard on the north, the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way and Granada Avenue on the east, St. Mary's Road on the south, and Interstate 10 on the west. The barrio was first platted in 1903 on land that Thomas Hughes had acquired in 1902 and called McKinley Park; he named its main street 'Annie Avenue' for his sister Annie Hughes, and over time the street — and then the neighborhood — became known as Anita. More than 90 percent of its homes were built by 1920, with the remainder completed before World War II, leaving a remarkably intact streetscape of flat-roofed Sonoran-tradition adobe row houses set right at the sidewalk, interspersed with Queen Anne and American Territorial cottages from the turn of the century. The neighborhood is anchored by Davis-Romero Bilingual Elementary Magnet School — the oldest continuously operating elementary school in Tucson, opened in 1901 and designed by master architect Henry Trost — and by the Anita Street Market, a 1936 corner tiendita long known for its tortillas. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, Barrio Anita carries no fee HOA; exterior changes go through the volunteer Barrio Anita Neighborhood Association and the city's design review. Residents back up to the David G. Herrera & Ramon Quiroz Park with its Oury Pool and recreation center, sit a block from the Santa Cruz River Park and The Loop's car-free bike path, and can walk across the river to Mercado San Agustín or east into downtown's restaurants, the Sun Link streetcar, and the Tucson Convention Center — with direct Interstate 10 access along the barrio's western edge.
