A grid-platted west-side barrio directly across the Santa Cruz River from downtown Tucson, bounded by West Speedway Boulevard on the north, the river on the east, West St. Mary's Road on the south, and North Silverbell Road on the west. The area took shape in the 1920s and built out mostly between the 1930s and the 1950s, acquiring the Hollywood name in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Its housing stock reads as a timeline of that build-out: flat-roofed adobe and pueblo-style houses on small lots, midcentury bungalows with covered patios and carports, larger pueblo homes from the 1940s and 1950s, and Spanish Revival infill built in the early 2000s — most on short paved driveways behind rock-landscaped front yards and narrow sidewalks, with Santa Catalina Mountain views up the north-south streets. There is no HOA over the barrio; it is represented by the volunteer Barrio Hollywood Neighborhood Association registered with the City of Tucson. Recreation is unusually dense for a neighborhood this size. Joaquin Murrieta Park at 1400 North Silverbell Road reopened in May 2025 after a Proposition 407-funded rebuild and carries a swimming pool, wading pool and splash pad, lighted baseball and softball fields, multi-use fields, playgrounds, a dog park, and rentable ramadas. The El Rio Neighborhood Center at 1390 West Speedway Boulevard adds a weight room, activity and meeting rooms, and a covered outdoor basketball court, with youth, adult, and senior programming. Next to it, the El Rio–Trini Alvarez Golf Course is an 18-hole municipal course of roughly 6,400 yards at par 70 that dates to the 1930s and hosted the PGA Tour's Tucson Open in its early decades; it ran as a private country club until the City of Tucson bought it for public play in 1968, and in 1971 the City carved the neighborhood center and Murrieta Park out of that land. The Santa Cruz River Park path and the Chuck Huckelberry Loop run the eastern edge. Downtown Tucson is about two miles east, Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital sits on the southern boundary at West St. Mary's Road, Mercado San Agustín and the Sun Link streetcar are roughly a mile southeast, the University of Arizona is about three miles east, and Interstate 10 interchanges at St. Mary's Road and Speedway Boulevard are each within about a mile, with Sun Tran service along Silverbell Road and Speedway. Historical resale pricing has run from the $170,000s for smaller adobe and bungalow homes to roughly $450,000 for larger pueblo and Spanish Revival houses.
