About El Presidio

The birthplace of Tucson and the city's oldest neighborhood — the literal ground on which the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson was established as a Spanish military fort on August 20, 1775. Bounded by 6th Street to the north, Alameda Street to the south, Granada Avenue to the west, and Church Avenue to the east, El Presidio sits twelve blocks from the heart of downtown and contains roughly 90 architecturally and historically significant buildings dating from circa 1860 through the early 1920s. The district reads like an open-air textbook of Southwest architecture: thick-walled Sonoran adobe row houses set right at the street line, hybrid Anglo-Territorial cottages added after the U.S. Army arrived, and the ornate Victorian, Queen Anne, Prairie, and Mission Revival mansions that followed the Southern Pacific Railroad into town in 1880 — including Henry C. Trost's 1900 Steinfeld Mansion (the original Owls Club), the 1868 Edward Nye Fish House, and the 1880 Stevens House (both now part of the Tucson Museum of Art's Historic Block). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and protected today as a City of Tucson Historic Preservation Zone, El Presidio has no fee HOA, but exterior changes go through the El Presidio Neighborhood Association and the city's Historic Preservation Officer.
