About Blenman-Elm

A near-square-mile historic central Tucson neighborhood roughly three miles north of downtown, bounded by Speedway Boulevard, Grant Road, Country Club Road, and Campbell Avenue. The neighborhood's roots trace to 1900, when developer Andrew Olsen built the first home at the corner of Helen Street and Plumer Avenue, but the bulk of the district was built during a postwar boom that began in 1936, peaked in 1955, and was largely complete by 1960. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, Blenman-Elm is widely considered the vanguard of the Tucson ranch-style home — but the district is unusually eclectic, containing 17 distinct architectural styles ranging from Sonoran adobe and Territorial to Spanish Colonial Revival, Bungalow, Tudor, Pueblo Revival, Art Moderne, and early Ranch. Twenty-one homes were designed by Swiss-born Tucson master architect Josias Joesler. The neighborhood is anchored by three landmark institutions still in use today: the Arizona Inn (1930), SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and School (1931), and Blenman Elementary School (1942). There is no fee HOA — the volunteer Blenman-Elm Neighborhood Association (BENA) handles preservation, advocacy, and community events — and residents share a back fence with Himmel Park's public pool, tennis courts, dog park, and Himmel Park Library, with Reid Park, the Reid Park Zoo, Randolph Golf Complex, and the University of Arizona all within a five-minute drive.
