About Menlo Park

Often called the birthplace of Tucson, Menlo Park sits across the Santa Cruz River from downtown at the foot of Sentinel Peak ("A" Mountain) — an area continuously inhabited for more than 4,000 years and the original site of the 1775 Mission San Agustín del Tucson. The neighborhood was platted as a streetcar suburb in the early 1900s by the Menlo Investment Company, and its older blocks still carry one of the city's most eclectic mixes of late-1800s Sonoran adobe row houses, Craftsman bungalows, Mission Revival cottages, and Prairie-style designs (including the 1917 William Bray House, influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright). South and east of the historic core, the master-planned Mercado District — anchored by the Mercado San Agustín public market (opened 2010) and the adjacent Mercado Annex — has added a tight grid of contemporary Sonoran row houses and live-work brownstones built to traditional design guidelines. There is no fee HOA over the historic neighborhood, but the volunteer Menlo Park Neighborhood Association is active in preservation, public-art, and traffic-calming work; the Mercado District homes carry their own design-review covenants. Walk to Mission Garden's living agricultural museum, the Sun Link streetcar to downtown and U of A, and the Santa Cruz River Park multi-use path, with Sentinel Peak Park, Tumamoc Hill, and the El Tiradito shrine all within a five-minute drive.
